2000 toyota mr2 spyder review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Toyota returns to its roadster roots. introductionthe mr2 spyder is toyota's attempt to return to the lightweight, reasonably priced roots of the original sports car market. The mr2 spyder represents a fun, comfortable roadster for a decent price. lineupthe beauty of toyota's strategy with the mr2 spyder is apparent in its model lineup: one car, no options, for $23,098. Toyota calls this 'mono-spec,' which is perhaps a suspect word. Regardless, this single-model strategy makes the mr2 less costly to build and distribute. Customers need only choose colors. Dealers provide wheel locks and an unnecessary cover that can be used when the convertible top is folded. walkaroundmr2 styling is a current interpretation of the classic mid-engined proportions with a very short hood and a stretched tail. The mr2 rides on a wheelbase that is 7 inches longer than the mazda miata wheelbase. It is even an inch or so longer than the porsche boxster and honda s2000 wheelbase. Despite the obviously different nose, the mr2 spyder looks a little like a boxster, especially in black, because the dark color camouflages the surface differences.  the manual convertible top works easily, and can be lowered from the driver's seat. A nice detail is that the roof collapses into the boot as a parallelogram, instead of the usual flip-over and collapse setup. That means that, like the boxster, the roof settles into place exposing only the top section, which rests flush with the body so no boot is needed to cover it. Unlike the boxster and the s2000, the mr2 features a glass rear window with an embedded defroster, so the car should be easier to live with in the winter.  an unusual aspect of the mr2 spyder is toyota's use of a space frame with bolt-on fenders. The design is similar to that of the pontiac fiero; it lets customers easily replace damaged components. It also lends itself to customization by the companies providing parts for the import drag racing scene. interiorthe interior is roomy and comfortable for a two-seat roadster. Controls fall readily to hand and provide positive feedback. The three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel has perforations in the areas most likely to be used, and the leather-wrapped shift knob feels similarly luxurious. The white-faced instruments appear to be lifted from the celica and set the mr2 apart from most of its competitors. The gauges are reminiscent of those in the mercedes slk, down to the use of large dots to shade the redline zone.  the pedals are brushed metal look, peppered with black rubber nubs for grip. They are comfortable pedals and toyota provides a dead pedal for the left foot. One exception: the yellow interior leans toward the red end of the spectrum, while the yellow paint reflects with the high frequency of the blue end. Result: the yellow inside clashes with the yellow outside, but works with some of the other colors.  toyota includes a cd/cassette stereo as standard equipment. The system produced good sound, though it probably won't deceive anyone into thinking it is a custom stereo. Like most convertibles, the sound tends to stay down in the footwell area. That problem seems to be solved only by use of headrest-mounted speakers like those used on the optional mazda miata stereo. The mr2 uses a traditional metal mast for an antenna, rather than a more durable rubber antenna or an antenna embedded in the windshield, but it seemed to get good reception. driving impressionthe mr2 spyder employs the same engine used in the toyota corolla and celica gt. The engine is rated at 138 horsepower, which should, on paper, move the 2,200-pound car briskly. But the engine's performance doesn't quite live up to the car's appearance. Toyota's vvt-i engine uses variable valve timing, but it doesn't generate a big surge of power when it switches to the high-power cam profile. And it doesn't feel as quick as a mazda miata. Still, toyota claims a 0- to 60-mph time of just under 7 seconds.  the five-speed shifter is good. It falls just short of the outstanding shifters in the mazda miata, honda s2000 and bmw z3, which are all front-engine cars. Routing the shift cables around the mr2's mid-placed engine apparently creates just enough drag that the shifter lacks the positive click-click feedback of sliding in and out of gears. Instead, there is a continuous light drag that masks much of the feedback from the gearbox. It is still better than the porsche boxster's shifter.  toyota decided the reason its second-generation mr2 was less popular than the first was that it was more expensive and heavier as a result of using celica components instead of corolla components as a foundation. So the mr2 spyder is based on prosaic corolla components, such as macpherson strut suspension front and rear. The steering is light, nicely balanced and provides good information about the road. The mid-engine design gives the car excellent balance that will give showroom stock racers an edge over the front-engine miata, but the macpherson strut suspension may offset that benefit.  the brakes are light and sensitive and feel easy to modulate. Only track testing will reveal how they respond when pushed hard, but they are more than sufficient for sporty street driving.  a problem in the passenger's seat is the blast of air that shoots between the outside mirror and the windshield pillar when driving al fresco. It doesn't have the problem on the driver's side for some reason. Toyota has created a separate multimedia web site (www. The pt cruiser is based on the dodge neon, a compact car noted for its sprightly performance. The cruiser's taller body adds not only a unique look, but also extra room for people and cargo.  its interior volume and versatility compares well to a small suv. Yet the pt cruiser is shorter in length than a neon, making it easy to park. And it's easy on gas.  now in its fifth year, with annual sales of more than 100,000, the cruiser is a familiar sight, but people are still intrigued by it. For starters, it's difficult to define within existing automotive marketing segments, leading chrysler to call the pt cruiser too cool to categorize. That fire comes in the form of 220 horsepower in the gt; a more affordable 180-horsepower turbo is also available.  if there's anything cooler than the standard pt cruiser, it's the pt cruiser convertible. But that's not all there is to the pt cruiser. The shape is intriguing, but underneath is a modern platform with front-wheel drive.  by exterior dimensions, the pt cruiser is quite compact. It's nearly 6 inches shorter than a neon. Yet with 63 inches from the pavement to the highest point of its roof, the cruiser sedan is also 7 inches taller than the neon, and nearly as tall as some minivans. That height is a crucial element of the pt cruiser's design.  the gt sedan is distinguished from the other models by its chromed wheels, larger air intakes, and a spoiler on its liftgate. Pretty cool.  with its top down, the pt cruiser convertible's high tail and integrated sport bar remind us of the old volkswagen cabrio. But where the vw's side windows sealed against its symbolic roll bar (almost as on a prewar convertible sedan), the chrysler's windows seal against each other for a more modern convertible profile. Its slightly narrower and color-keyed sport bar sits behind the windows, inside the car, and is aerodynamically designed to minimize wind noise. A nice boot is provided that dresses up the appearance with the top down. The driver faces three white-faced gauges set in individual cylinders, with speedometer center, tachometer right and fuel and water temperature left. The gt's silver-faced speedometer reads up to 140 mph, while the standard cruiser's speedo goes to 120. The door levers have a nice action, and the switches operate with good tactile feel, though they're not world class. The standard stereo sounds tinny; we haven't spent much time with the new infinity system. Also, there's a separate set button for the station presets, fussier than simply holding the preset down.  a bonus of the cruiser's tall profile is its upright seating position, with a fairly high view ahead, somewhat like a sport-utility vehicle or minivan. The front seats in the three lower-line models have a reasonable amount of bolstering to keep driver and passenger from sliding side to side. The gt also features a leather wrapped steering wheel with satin-silver spokes, and bright accents on the pedals.  roominess is a virtue in the cruiser. The sedan's 121. 5 cubic feet of interior volume is comparable to that of large cars such as the mercedes-benz s-class or lincoln town car, though it certainly doesn't have the ambience of those cars. This all-new pickup boasts levels of refinement and comfort that match those of the best trucks from general motors and ford. New designs from gm and ford had put them ahead on this score, but that's all changed with the 2002 dodge ram. This complete overhaul puts the dodge back on solid ground with the half-ton pickups from ford and gm. lineupdodge ram is available with two cab configurations, regular cab and quad cab. Quad cab models ride on a wheelbase that's 20 -inches longer than comparable regular cab models.  two bed lengths are available, a 6-foot, 3-inch standard bed and an 8-foot long bed. Ordering the long bed only adds about $300 to the price. Long-bed models ride on a wheelbase that's 20 inches longer than comparable short-bed models. Eight-foot long beds also get a bigger fuel tank, 35 gallons in place of the standard 26-gallon tank.  three engines are offered: most popular will be the 4. 7-liter v8, a new overhead cam design. A new 3. 7-liter v6 is available that's similar in design to the 4. 7-liter v8 is available. St comes standard with air conditioning, but is equipped with vinyl upholstery, wind-up windows, and manual door locks. It was a highly successful design, one that gave the dodge pickups a look of power and capability. The bold styling also helped boost sales exponentially. So dodge had no intention of turning away from the big horse-collar grille and freightliner fenders when it redesigned the ram, and the look established eight years ago has been maintained.  though evolutionary in design, the sheet metal is indeed all new. Park a 2002 ram next to a 2001 ram and the differences are striking. The design has been extensively re-sculpted for reduced wind noise and better rainwater management. The new ram looks sleek and refined compared with the previous model. The old one looks mashed down compared with the new one.  few grilles are as instantly recognizable as the massive horse collar grille of the ram. Even more massive this year, the grille distinguishes among trim levels: the horse collar is all chrome on the slt model, with a gray honeycomb center. Slt+ features a body-color grille surround and chrome cross hairs. Sport trim includes a body-color surround and cross hairs with unique chrome billets in the center.  moving rearward, the new ram presents a more robust appearance than before with a broad, sloping hood and a pronounced crown that falls to the bold front fenders. A faster, raked-back windshield improves aerodynamics and water management, and gives the new ram a more modern appearance. The leading edge of the front door overlaps the a-pillar, creating a smoother transition from the front of the cab to the side. Everything is smoother and more integrated. The big side mirrors, great for visibility, are now mounted on platforms to reduce wind noise, and a channel has been specially designed to keeps water off of the mirrors. An integrated air dam improves engine cooling and air conditioner performance.  standard bed length is 6 feet, 3 inches, but an 8-foot bed is now available for both cab styles. That's a bit much when trying to heave heavy gear aboard. interiorram interiors are completely redesigned for 2002. In fact, one of the biggest improvements offered by the new ram is in the area of comfort.  that comfort starts with roominess. To increase roominess, dodge stole 3 inches out of the bed and added more than 3 inches to the cab. The optional leather seats are also comfortable and supportive during long drives. Three-point shoulder belts are used at all locations, including the rear center seat. A big fold-down center armrest/console comes with adjustable dividers and a power outlet. White-faced instruments with turquoise numbers look sporty and trendy, but don't offer the legibility of traditional white-on-black designs, particularly at dusk. At night, the instruments are nicely illuminated in green.  the design of the audio system could be improved for ease of use. Setting a button for a station, for example, requires pressing a separate set button, rather than just holding the button down. Sliding bass and treble controls are harder to adjust than knobs when bouncing around in a pickup truck. Optional steering wheel audio controls 75) solve this with brilliantly designed buttons behind the steering wheel that are much easier to use than the awkward steering wheel controls found on gm's full-size trucks. Likewise, cruise controls on the steering wheel are easy to operate.  otherwise, the center dash is a paradigm of convenience. Large heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (hvac) buttons can be operated while wearing gloves. A textured fabric is used for trim around the audio and hvac controls, somewhat similar to what's found in volkswagens, gives the center dash a nice look and feel. Just below the hvac controls is a slot lined with a rubber mat that's perfect for a wallet or other small items. A big panel below that folds down with adjustable cup holders. Overhead is a console with an effective pair of map lights, a trip computer, a compartment for sunglasses, and a compass, which every self-respecting truck should have.  regular cab models come fitted with a tray behind the seats big enough to hold a large bucket. Dodge even supplies the bucket, a tray designed to carry tools and such. There's even a hook just to the right of the center dash that's useful for hanging onto a couple of grocery bags; the brits call these curry hooks.  the new quad cab is quite nice. It's easy to see why. The rear seat is roomy, with enough rake to the seatback to make it comfortable for two adults. Its size also makes the rear bench seat suitable for child safety seats. New supercrew is best light-duty crew cab available. introductionthe f-150 is available in every imaginable pickup truck configuration. It can act like a serious work truck, an off-road toy, or a luxurious everyday vehicle that doubles as a highly capable weekend tool. There's even a hot rod.  it comes in a myriad of bed lengths, two different body styles, and now three distinct cab configurations. Crew cabs have become the big fad in compact and mid-size trucks the past couple of years, but with the exception of the tried-and-true super-long heavy-duty models, this new full-size ford crew cab is by far the most comfortable of the new trucks. Overall length is kept short by using an ultra-short bed that measures just 5 1/2 feet; though the bed is a compromise, it relieves the driver of the daily burden of maneuvering a pickup that's as long as an aircraft carrier. The supercrew is equipped like a luxury sport-utility, with power-adjustable pedals and optional moonroof, rear-seat entertainment system, and a handsome leather interior.  as for the rest of the 2001 f-150 line, power-adjustable pedals are standard on all lariat models and optional on xl and xlt trim lines. Antilock brakes (abs) are standard throughout the f-150 line, and remote keyless entry is now a standard feature on xlt models. lineupthree engines are available: the standard engine is a 4. 2-liter v6 engine that generates 202 horsepower. The optional 4. 6-liter v8 produces 220 horsepower. The 5. 4-liter v8 produces 260 horsepower. And there are three trim levels: xl, xlt, and lariat. With colors and options thrown in, the model matrix is huge. walkaroundthe f-150 is a stylish truck, with much more attention paid to aerodynamic performance than either the dodge or gm pickups. It is rounder, friendlier and looks much more like a car than the dodge or gm. That may be part of the reason it outsells all other pickup trucks by a considerable margin. The current chevrolet and gmc trucks are still pretty new (they were redesigned for the 1999 model year), but their conservative styling doesn't look as modern as the ford's. The dodge ram looks long in the tooth, by comparison. The f-150's aerodynamic hood falls away very rapidly from the base of the windshield so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck; that's handy for maneuvering off road, for parking, and when maneuvering in tight city traffic. interiorin some ways, the ford f-150 interior is superior in flavor to the gm and dodge trucks. The f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's successful passenger cars, such as the ford taurus and lincoln continental. The designers adapted these cues to the pickup's large cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the ford f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and better executed than the competition, big and bold but not outsized for a big vehicle.  the f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. The xlt's cloth seats have a recline feature and a lumbar support on the driver's side for even more driving comfort.  all pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. Getting into and out of the rear seats was easy. The rear seats are comfortable and offer good legroom, allowing passengers to slide their feet under the front seats. Rear-seat comfort is such that and adult should be able to ride back there for longer trips.  supercrew's rear seats fold down (and are split 60/40), offering a nearly flat cargo space. It's a great place to put cargo or for big dogs. Small storage compartments behind the front seats add utility. driving impressiontwo-wheel-drive f-150s use conventional steel leaf springs at the rear and a coil spring independent front suspension. We find the brakes on ford trucks to be average in stopping power and average in fade characteristics.  although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated at 220 horsepower and 290 foot-pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little duff for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road. For any customer contemplating those kinds of duties, the 5. 4-liter v8 engine is a much better choice. summaryford's f-150 is still among the most car-like of the full-size pickup trucks, with slick looks, pleasing performance, a comfortable cabin, and a proven powertrain.  ford's new f-150 supercrew is the most comfortable of the light-duty crew cabs currently available. model lineup4x2 styleside 120-in. Buick says it has the competition, specifically the ford five hundred, dodge intrepid, honda accord, and toyota camry, beat on a number of fronts, including quietness and overall refinement. This is a car that was well on its way to completion when gm vice-chairman and product guru bob lutz joined the company, and charged the buick team to delay the program one year, get the car right, and then introduce it. It's pretty clear that the wait, and the extra effort and money invested into the program, were worth it.  lacrosse is not an all-new car by any means. It's built in canada on gm's w-car intermediate platform, one of the oldest in the gm chassis inventory. But about 80 percent of the parts and systems underneath are new, along with new interior and exterior designs.  the lacrosse has a rich, high-quality looking interior with attractive woodgrain trim, nicely presented instruments and controls and available leather seats with nice-looking gathered stitching. Buick's quiet tuning has made the new lacrosse one of the quietest, most pleasant cars to ride and drive in among the entire class.  the lacrosse rides smoothly and quietly, but its steering is much more precise than previous models and it turns into corners crisply with little body lean. The v6 engines offer good power, growling under acceleration, but smooth and quiet when motoring along, and the transmissions work flawlessly.  new features make a well-equipped lacrosse a safe, all-weather family car with nice conveniences. The cx 22,835) is the base model and it comes with cloth upholstery and manually operated air conditioning. The lacrosse cx is powered by a cast-iron 3. 8-liter overhead-valve v6 engine that was first introduced in buicks back in 1979, the continuously improved and now rated at a modest 200 horsepower. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are optional.  the middle model, the cxl 25,335), comes with leather upholstery, automatic climate control, abs, and quite a list of additional standard equipment. The cxl also uses the 3. 8-liter engine.  the cxs 28,335) is the performance car of the family, with gm's new high-feature 3. 6-liter v6 with modern double overhead cams and variable valve timing develops about 240 horsepower. The cxs gets its own suspension and steering system, 17-inch tires and wheels, and a raft of additional touches like driving lights under the front bumper.  the lacrosse is available with five- or six-passenger seating: either bucket seats with a center console and shifter or a 40/20/40 bench seat with the shifter on the steering column. Standard features include tilt wheel, remote keyless entry, power driver's seat, programmable power locks, power windows, and a six-speaker am/fm/cd system. All models come standard with onstar including a one-year subscription.  options include side curtain air bags 395), stabilitrak chassis control on the cxs model only 495), xm satellite radio 325 with one-year free subscription), power sunroof 900), remote starting 150), heated front seats 295), 17-inch chrome wheels 695), and a chrome package 295). A gold convenience option package 1,150) is offered with a leather steering wheel with redundant climate and audio controls, a universal transmitter, auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated outside mirrors, six-way power passenger seat, rear park assist, and rear reading lamps. Two cast aluminum wheels are available, one 16-inch and one 17-inch. walkaroundlacrosse is unmistakably a buick sedan, with its trademark vertical bar waterfall grille, long nose, long slopes and simple body curvatures. They've added a tiny third side window behind the c-pillar to add some visual interest. About the only new design theme is at the rear, where there is a discernible dent in the decklid that ties the taillamps together. There is a single, slender chrome side spear on the doors and body in lieu of anything sportier.  the base lacrosse cx comes with 16-inch wheels and bolt-on faux alloy wheel-covers and has almost no decoration at all. Body, door, and fender gaps are noticeably smaller than on the regal and century, and the new aero headlamps are said to be 35-percent brighter. Cx models can be identified by a grained graphite-color finish on the rocker panels underneath the doors, while other models have these panels in body color.  gm's aging w-car architecture has been torn apart and put back together to improve the lacrosse's ride and handling by several orders of magnitude. The old steel front cradle has been replaced by a lighter, stronger, stiffer extruded aluminum one that holds the engine, transaxle, steering and suspension tighter, controls powertrain rocking, and weighs 20 pounds less.  buick says the new car is designed with more high-strength steel content than regal and century, a magnesium cross-car beam behind the instrument panel, another cross-car beam behind the rear seats, steel reinforcements in the rocker panels, interlocking door latch system, high-strength steel door beams, and a double-thick quiet steel floor pan and firewalls, all added in the name of crash safety and quietness. Altogether, buick says, about 40 additional pounds of sound deadeners have been added to the car, including structural foam in the front fenders. interiorthe buick designers were given a much longer wheelbase, two inches longer than the old century and regal. And all of it was dedicated to back seat legroom. My 6-foot, 4-inch frame can sit behind a 6-foot, 4-inch driver with plenty of room to spare now.  the lacrosse interior is altogether new and different from the cheapie regal and century rent-a-car interiors. There are fewer but larger individual pieces, built to closer tolerances, for a richer, higher quality look inside. The instruments and controls are presented in white on black, and each of the three round dials in the deeply tunneled instrument panel has a chrome ring around it. Very nicely presented, sportier-looking than previous instruments, with small-diameter chrome-ringed knobs arrayed around the dashboard.  the center stack is done in a mica-flecked flat black, with a trip computer and driver information system that's easy to put through its menu, though the information panel is so glossy that it's hard to read in the morning or afternoon light. The entire dashboard is decorated with a very good imitation woodgrain material. Taken together, the system has made the new lacrosse one of the quietest, most pleasant cars to ride and drive in in the entire class.  new optional features available on the lacrosse that were never available on the century or regal include a remote starting system that will work from up to 500 feet away, onstar, xm satellite radio, and stabilitrak, and if we were ordering a lacrosse, we would add all of these excellent systems to make a truly complete, safe and all-weather family car. driving impressionwe drove all of the lacrosse models at the car's introduction in northern michigan. Both of the available v6 engines have been tuned to give a nice, healthy growl on full throttle, but disappear into the background in high-gear cruising.  the standard 3. 8-liter engine is rated at 200 horsepower and 225 foot-pounds of torque, a cast-iron v6 that's been fitted with electronic throttle control (etc), a stiffer crankshaft, an underhood silencer, new pulleys, new power steering, and a structural oil pan all in the name of less mechanical noise. With all of its new parts, the 3. 8 is the same gutsy v-6 it's always been, with good torque on demand, smooth, quiet operation, and 29 miles per gallon on the highway in the new car.  the new 3. 6-liter, the so-called high-feature v6, with double overhead cams and electronic throttle control has quite a bit more horsepower and torque, revs more freely, but comes only in the cxs (at a $3,000 price penalty). The final numbers are expected to be 240 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 230 foot-pounds of torque at 3200 rpm, and 28 mpg.  the transmissions in all three versions worked flawlessly. The optional stabilitrak suspension package comes with magnasteer ii power steering.  we found the csx more sporty to drive through the trees on an autumn day in northern michigan. The steering has the same good feel and turn-.
